Book off-peak dates and use Reward Flight Saver on short-haul — it caps the cash surcharge at roughly £1–£17.50 each way, so a winter city break can cost a few thousand Avios plus pocket change instead of a full fare. Check the peak/off-peak calendar before you fix dates; one day either side can halve the points.
