I flew into Honolulu a number of years ago on Air Canada with one engine switched off. This is not the only emergency landing I have experienced, but so far, touch wood, the pilot and the plane have got me down safely. Regardless of my safe landings, it’s undoubtedly unnerving to see fire engines and ambulances lined up along the runway ready for your landing.
On Wednesday American Airlines flight AA4439 from Atlanta to New York LaGuardia, an Embraer ERJ-175 operated by Republic Airways, suffered runaway “trim” during climb out.
The plane couldn’t get its nose down and the crew reported a stall situation. The crew of the aircraft eventually switched over to the co-pilot’s controls which were working properly and the plane was cleared to land.
The air traffic control recording shows what a brilliant job the pilots did to get everyone safely back to Atlanta. Perhaps the most chilling aspect of this recording is the battle that you hear, that the pilot is having with the plane. For a while, it won’t go down…
